Why a wedding in Elche looks different

Elche is the capital of the Baix Vinalopó area and is famous for its palm grove, which is on the UNESCO heritage list. These are not decorative palms along the streets but a historic oasis with an ancient irrigation system, and the fincas for celebrations stand right inside it.

For that reason a wedding in Elche is almost always partly or entirely outdoors: the ceremony in the garden, drinks at sunset among the palms, and the dinner in a hall or under an awning. It looks wonderful, and that is exactly why it needs more kit than a closed hotel hall of the same size. In Elche you pay not for square metres but for open space. The sound has to be bigger and the lighting is built from zero, but the picture you get is one the city cannot give you.

Alicante-Elche airport is right here, and it is a real advantage that people rarely think about when choosing a town. Some fincas, such as El Cortijo, are five minutes from the terminal. If part of your guest list flies in from Ukraine, Poland or Germany, it means this:

• Nobody loses half a day on a transfer after the flight;
• You can plan arrivals for the day of the party instead of a day before;
• Transfers and hotels cost less;
• A guest can fly in in the morning and fly back the same evening.

Technical plan for open-air venues

A celebration among the palms is beautiful, but it sets specific tasks for the equipment:

• More sound: in open space there are no walls to reflect it, so we count the power with a reserve;
• Lighting from zero: a garden has no ceiling lights, and it gets dark fast after sunset; lighting up the palms also gives you that magazine picture;
• Electricity: an old finca can lack the spare power for a full kit, and sometimes a generator is needed;
• Cable runs: they are longer across a garden than in a hall and must be safe for guests;
• Evening damp: near water and greenery the equipment needs protection;
• A rain plan: an awning, a tent or a move into the hall.

How far is Elche from Alicante

It is about 25 km, twenty-five minutes on the A-7. Together with Torrevieja and Benidorm it is the closest area to our base, so the journey adds little to the price and a late handover of the finca still leaves time to build the rig.

• September to October: the month range we like most, once the heat has gone and the evenings are still warm;

• Any noise limit and its cut-off hour, which out of town is usually softer than in built-up areas;
• When we can come in to set up, since an open venue needs more time;
• How a lorry gets through the garden and where it unloads;
• What is provided for rain: an awning, a tent, a spare hall;
• Whether the garden has lighting and whether it is enough in the evening;
• A room where the musicians can change and wait.

What affects the price in Elche

A fixed price for an evening would be a guess made without seeing the finca. What moves the figure is who plays (from a single soloist to the whole band), the amount of kit, how many guests come, how long the music runs, and whether the finca has enough power or needs a generator. An open garden costs more than an indoor hall because the lighting starts from scratch. The drive from Alicante is only 25 km. Mistakes to avoid at an Elche finca

• Counting on the finca's own lighting, when there is almost none in the grove and the garden vanishes after sunset;
• Asking about access late: the finca may open an hour before the guests, but the rig needs several hours;
• Fixing the finca and pricing the music and equipment only afterwards;
• Nobody answering for the final sound since band and equipment are booked from separate firms.
